Water Quality Testing in New York’s Capital Region

The appearance, taste, or odor of water alone cannot confirm its quality because many contaminants may be present without noticeable signs. Laboratory analysis provides information about the specific characteristics and contaminants included in the selected test. Aim High Home Inspection Services provides professional water sampling and laboratory-analyzed water quality testing for home buyers, homeowners, and other property owners throughout New York’s Capital Region and surrounding areas.

What Water Quality Testing Includes

Residential water sample being collected for laboratory analysis

Water quality testing begins with selecting the appropriate laboratory test based on the property and the client’s needs. Water samples are collected from an appropriate plumbing fixture using laboratory-provided containers and required sampling procedures. The samples are then submitted to an independent laboratory for analysis of the characteristics and contaminants included in the selected test. After the results are received and reviewed, the laboratory report is emailed to the client with a clear explanation of the findings and recommended next steps when appropriate. Water quality testing is available with a home inspection or as a standalone service.

Understanding Your Water Quality Results

The laboratory report provides the measured result for each characteristic or contaminant included in the selected test, along with an applicable comparison value when available. Some results may relate primarily to taste, odor, staining, or plumbing concerns, while others may have health-based guidance. The findings apply only to the sample collected and do not evaluate contaminants that were not included in the selected test. Water quality may also change with the source, season, plumbing system, treatment equipment, and other conditions. After the report is reviewed, the findings are explained and additional sampling or evaluation by a qualified water-treatment professional may be recommended when appropriate.

When Water Quality Testing Is Recommended

Water quality testing is recommended when purchasing a property, particularly when the home is served by a private well or recent laboratory results are unavailable. Testing may also be appropriate when there is a change in the water’s taste, odor, or appearance; after flooding, well repairs, plumbing work, or installation of treatment equipment; or when contamination is suspected. A lender, local authority, or real estate transaction may require specific testing. Periodic testing may also be considered based on the water source, property conditions, household concerns, and applicable public-health guidance.

Water Quality Testing FAQs

Find answers to common questions about why water testing matters, when private wells should be tested, available laboratory testing options, sample collection, and result interpretation.

Why is water quality testing important?

Water can appear clear and have no unusual taste or odor while still containing bacteria, chemicals, or other contaminants. Unlike public water systems, private wells are not routinely monitored by a water supplier, making periodic testing important for identifying potential concerns. Laboratory testing provides information about drinking water quality and helps determine whether treatment, maintenance, or further evaluation may be appropriate.

The New York State Department of Health recommends testing private well water at least once each year for bacteria and every three to five years for other contaminants. Testing is also recommended when purchasing a home, after flooding or well repairs, and when the water develops an unusual taste, odor, or appearance. Additional testing may be appropriate when nearby land use changes or a specific contamination concern is identified.

Water quality testing includes selecting an appropriate laboratory panel based on the water source, property conditions, and client concerns. Samples are collected using laboratory-provided containers and required collection procedures, then submitted to an independent certified laboratory for analysis. The laboratory report identifies the parameters tested, measured results, applicable reference levels, and whether further evaluation or treatment should be considered.

Available testing depends on the laboratory panel selected and may include total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates, nitrites, lead, arsenic, iron, manganese, sodium, chloride, hardness, pH, turbidity, PFAS, and other parameters. The appropriate panel is selected based on the water source, property location, observed conditions, client concerns, and any applicable lender or transaction requirements.

Water samples are collected from an appropriate fixture using laboratory-provided containers and collection requirements specific to each parameter. The samples are labeled, documented, and transported within the laboratory’s required holding times and temperature conditions. An independent laboratory certified by the New York State Department of Health Environmental Laboratory Approval Program for the applicable drinking-water parameters then analyzes the samples and issues a written report of the results.

Laboratory results identify the measured concentration of each tested parameter and compare it with applicable drinking-water standards or reference levels. A result within the listed limit applies only to the parameters tested and does not confirm the absence of untested contaminants. When bacteria are detected or another parameter exceeds the applicable level, further evaluation and appropriate treatment or corrective action are recommended, followed by retesting when indicated.
